Here are my workout logs from our vacation in California during the summer of 2003. Most of them
are bike rides, but there are a few hikes. The graphs are made with data collected from
my Polar heart rate monitor. Elevations are in meters, and distance (for bike rides) is in
kilometers (for hikes the x-axis is minutes). These are not standard Polar graphs, as the
software provided by Polar only runs on Windows, and my laptop is Linux. These graphs were
generated from Polar data with open-source software that can be found at daveb.net.
Many thanks to Dave B.
Most of the rides were at Pt. Mugu State Park, just north of Malibu. Sycamore Canyon runs from the beach in toward Newbury Park. The hills off the canyon rise to as much as 3000 feet (Sandstone Peak), with rideable dirt roads and trails going up to around 1200 feet along a ridge that is roughly parrallel to the Pacific Coast Highway. Great riding.
Totals - 27:51 riding time. About 8 hours hiking.

Went home to pickup Robin and then went in via Sycamore PCH with Bobby. Rode in canyon, through unnamed trails to Ranch Center Road, down Wood Canyon, then part way up Overlook to the Scenic Trail junction, did as an interval. Then bombed it down and went back to the PCH parking lot.
Wednesday
Hike to Gaviota Peak in Santa Barbara. Below the graph got cut off during the descent because my HRM ran out of memory. But you can see that this hike began near sea level, but rose quickly to the 2458 foot peak in just over 3 miles. It was hot and steep so we hung out at the top for quite a while.

Point Conception could be seen to the north, up near Vandenberg AFB. | Off the coast, Angel Peak on Santa Cruz Island is barely visible in the fog 20 miles away. |

Rode at Sycamore with Robin in the afternoon after Big Dad's driving test. Went in the canyon, back down paved rode and into the new singletrack. Rode downhill to Two Fox trail, went down that too. Rode out to the campground.
Friday
135 minutes
AM solo ride from Newbury Park side. Went down paved hill, then up Ranch Center to the new trail, then down all the way and out to Two Fox again, went down hill, through canyon to Overlook. Caught a rideer on Overlook at the top. 21:50 to the Ray Miller trailhead, was a little labored due to the heat. Rode all the way up to Guadalasco Trailhead, rode strong. Went down Guadalasco easy, then up Wood Canyon, and finished up strong to the water tower. Down Ranch Center and up the paved climb, got cooked halfway up and crawled to the top.
Saturday
More travel.
